What is PDF GT?

PDF GT is a Multi Purpose PDF application built for small businesses and home users. PDF GT was created to focus on three main features: PDF Page Management, Combining/Creating/Separating, and proper OCR from flattened PDFs and Images.

PDF GT is best known for its ability to OCR columns, newspaper articles, magazine text, legal documents, scanned images, scanned PDFs, data tables, spreadsheets, screenshots and much more!

Page Management:

PDF GT uses an easy to understand method of PDF Page Management. Select your page and move it up or down with the management buttons. Pages can also be deleted, imported or exported from existing documents in the same manner. To import pages simply open a document when you have another one loaded. All pages will be imported into document that is already opened.

Combining/Creating/Separating

Combining several documents together is as simple as selecting the documents and opening them inside PDF GT. This includes images and PDF documents. Image are automatically scaled to fit to the current PDF page layout.

Separating existing PDF documents is also an easy process. Open the document(s) you need and either extract one page at a time, or extract all the pages at once into their own separate PDF document.

OCR

OCR stands for ‘Optical Character Recognition’. It is a technology that converts readable text into an editable document. While most OCR programs only look for text in prerendered PDF text blocks, PDF GT’s OCR process has been programmed to look for text in flat PDF’s and images. This works on images, scanned documents, screenshots and even data tables and spreadsheets.

While our OCR reader can read images, documents and passages, it was specifically trained in newspaper articles and data tables. These documents are known to be the most difficult images to OCR, which is specifically why we chose to focus on them.

Because of this focus we offer several features most OCR programs do not: full-page or sectional OCR, column alignment, line and spacing correction, name/spell checker, table OCR and image adjustments (exposure, brightness, contrast).

Full Page or Sectional OCR

Full Page or Sectional OCR

Full-Page OCR means that the entire page of your document or image can be OCRed at one time. Ideal for books and large passages.

Sectional OCR is an option available for when you only have a small portion you would like to convert to editable text. Ideal for small passages, articles from a magazine, newspaper, part of a data table or capturing something that is on another screen.

PDF GT is one of the few OCR programs that can read and separate text from a Data Table. Using a custom algorithm, PDF GT scans the document for cells in a table, segments those into separate images and OCR’s those images into a tab-delimited text. In short, PDF GT can read tables and spreadsheets and OCR them into a tabbed format.

Most OCR programs read each line of text as its own paragraph. PDF GT attempts to create sentences instead of lines. Each line is sent through a character counter, and if the number of letters exceeds a predetermined amount PDF GT knows it is a continuation of the previous paragraph. This results in the most completed OCR paragraph creator on the market today.

Name Checker and Spell Checker

PDF GT comes with a pre-programmed name checker and spell checker, enabled by a button. First is a name checker, which compares each work to a list of all known names. If the name is not found, then it is sent through a spell checker. The spell checker will compare the word to a spelling library, which will correct any misspelled words to its closest match.

Unlike most OCR programs, PDF GT views columns as linked text. This means that when one column ends the second one begins. Text in columns are translated exactly they way they are meant to be read.

Image Adjustment Options

Our built-in OCR program uses a still image captured from the document to create a full-page or segmented OCR text. These images can be enhanced by the user with adjustable sharpness, brightness and contrast levels. These settings are used to assist the OCR program in picking up words if the translation process did not produce a desired outcome.
